Chris and I camped at the Molas Lake campground near Silverton, Colorado for three nights. We were up before sunrise all three days to set the shot, and this image was captured on day two. I shot hundreds of exposures that morning as the sun worked its way up. I wanted to wait until the sun rose high enough to give the trees on the far banks their sunny edge. The water was perfectly still except for a few hungry trout breaking the surface.

On a recent trip to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, in early spring, we were out at one of our favorite locations looking for some new images. It was a gray rainy day and the clouds were awesome all around us. But it was when we turned around and saw this little shack up against the wall of Aspens, that we knew we had a really cool shot. The Aspens had yet to bloom and they created this beautiful backdrop.

Classic Flint Hills scenery.

We first shot this location for our documentary “Standing Tallgrass” that was filmed and produced in the winter of 2014. I always remembered the location and angles because of the beautiful little hills and surrounding layers. It was such a peaceful location.

As always you never know what kind of sunset you’re going to get when you go on location, but on this evening in February 2023 we were treated to a very subtle beauty.

This image was taken on July 18, 2014 in the San Juan Mountains north of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The same location as our image “A Thin Place” which was shot exactly six years later. There was a haze from some nearby wildfires that gave the mountains a dreamy haze.

On a trip to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park in the winter of 2022, Chris and I came upon this scene of Bull Elk as we were leaving the park in a very heavy snowstorm. I jumped out of the car and shot this handheld, with the heavy snow creating a sort of filter on the Elk, that also added to the mood of the image. Despite the snow “filter” this instantly became one of our favorites, and also one of the most popular images in our collection.

In early December of 2023, when we lived in Kansas, we woke up to a dense fog warning. There was a particular shot we had in mind if that happened, but that shot really did not work. But as we were driving around the countryside, we had our eyes peeled for cool compositions. We hit the brakes when we saw this shot. It’s our favorite shot from our morning adventure. So happy with the feel of this scene. Fog is so peaceful.

This location has a very special meaning to us. Located north of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, it is a view of the San Juan Mountains. We first came across this location while on a family vacation in July 2014, we returned to Pagosa Springs in 2020 on another family vacation, and once again on our last evening there, we returned to this location to photograph the sunset. It was magical that evening.

This beautiful meadow is located in Rocky Mountain National Park on the East Inlet Trail. The trailhead is just east of Grand Lake, Colorado.

Chris and I were up well before dawn to hike to this location and be set up to capture this shot as the sun rose behind the mountains. Shot in September 2022.

We visited this location for four evenings in February, 2024. This image was from the very first night, and we could never top it. We loved the reflections of the sky and the sun kissing the horizon. Shot with a long exposure to give the lake a smooth dreamy feel. To me it felt like the taller tress were doing some sort of wacky Snag ballet. Yes I’m strange like that.

We were exploring an old horse stable in the Flint Hills of Kansas. As we waked in this fine looking fella poked his head through the opening in the stall to see who these new visitors were. I really loved how he was surrounded by all the tack hanging on both sides of the opening.

Cruising the dusty backroads of the Flint Hills of Kansas we came across this small gathering of wild horses that had come down from the tops of the hills for an evening feed and water. They were too busy eating to look up and I was fine with that. Led by the white foreground horse, the early fall yellow colors of the grasses and weeds, combined with the broken sky gave this scene a real pleasing color and balance.

I love the boulders that line the shores of Twin Lakes, Colorado, which is north of Buena Vista. I wanted to get a long exposure to make the waters smooth, and the clouds a bit dreamy. But those clouds were from a storm coming our way very quickly. I managed to get a couple of exposures off, and back to our car right before the storm cut loose. This is the Black and white version, which I prefer for the dramatic feel.

We visited this location three times to photograph this cool little red barn. The first two attempts never quite came out like we wanted. We decided we needed more snow. After a heavier snowfall we saw the subtle clouds forming as sunset neared. We rushed to the location just in time to catch this beautiful sunset. Third time was the charm!

We found this super cool barn near our home in Spring Hill, Kansas. This image was shot on our second evening of shooting at the location. We decided we wanted a stormy look for the final image, and on this particular evening there were severe storms heading our way. This was captured right at sundown, although there was no sun to see. We used multiple exposures, shot within seconds of each other to expose for the angry skies, the barn and especially the grasses. Combined using High Dynamic Range techniques.
