Subtle Beauty - Standard Ratio
from $60.00

This has become our most popular image. Classic Flint Hills of Kansas scenery.

We first shot this location for our documentary “Standing Tallgrass” that was filmed and produced in the winter of 2014. I always remembered the location and angles because of the beautiful little hills and surrounding layers. It was such a peaceful location.

As always you never know what kind of sunset you’re going to get when you go on location, but on this evening in February 2023 we were treated to a very subtle beauty.

Red Barn In Winter
from $70.00

Third time was the charm. Chris and i discovered this little barn on our many trips between Lawrence, Kansas and our home in Spring Hill. It was such a cool barn and the little stand of trees added nice balance to the scene. Although it was a bit of a drive, we shot this scene three times before we shot this image. The first shoot was in a heavy fog. But we did not like the look of the pasture. The second shoot was during a light snowfall. It was pretty cool, but it wasn’t enough. The final shot was after a heavier snow and a day of clearing. We drove to the location and just hoped that the sunset would be there for us. The snow was so heavy and thick I could not get to the exact angle I had been shooting before. So I adjusted my composition and started shooting. Since the shot now faced northwest, the colors from the incredible sunset that were out of frame, and more to the south were insane. But the subtle and beautiful colors we captured were perfect for this shot. You can feel the intense colors reflecting in the face of the barn.

The Lone Maple
from $60.00

While we were out scouting locations for a portrait shoot, we came across this beautiful Maple at the height of autumn colors. Located in Stilwell, Kansas. The storm was building to the east, but there was still some sun breaking though behind me as I shot this. The simple composition of this image has become a favorite.

Treeline In The Fog
from $70.00

While home in Spring Hill, Kansas in early December of 2023, we woke up to a dense fog warning. There was a particular shot we had in mind if that happened. This is not it. As we were driving around the countryside, we had our eyes peeled for cool compositions. We hit the brakes when we saw this shot. It’s our favorite shot from our morning adventure. So happy with the feel of this scene. Fog is so peaceful. Our original idea was pretty cool too, but we decided it would look way cooler after a nice snowfall. That shot turned into “Red Barn in Winter”.

In The Open
from $60.00

We had been driving by this classic rural scene for two years after we moved to Spring Hill, Kansas. The first fall we were there, the farmer was growing soybeans in this field, and they turned this beautiful golden color in the fall, but just for a week or so before they turned brown. Sadly we missed the shot that year.

Last year he rotated his crop to corn. We were hopeful he would plant soybeans again this year and he did. Since the scene faces north we knew we would not get any kind of true sunset, but were hopeful for some epic clouds in the northern sky. After a day of storms we went out and captured this scene. I love how the blue tones of the sky work with the blue of the old barn, and the yellow crops were the finishing touch. A new favorite.

Barn Storming
from $70.00

We found this super cool barn near our home in Spring Hill, Kansas. This image was shot on our second evening of shooting at the location. We decided we wanted a stormy look for the final image, and on this particular evening there were severe storms heading our way. This was captured right at sundown, although there was no sun to see. We used multiple exposures, shot within seconds of each other to expose for the angry skies, the barn and especially the grasses. Combined using High Dynamic Range techniques. The severe storms hit about an hour later. We survived those too.

Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse
from $60.00

One of the most photographed buildings in the Flint Hills of Kansas is the historic Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of images of this schoolhouse to be found, we wanted to get our version for our collection. We were treated to a very nice sunset the evening we set up. The stone walls are a classic Flint Hills feature, so I decided to make them a big part of the composition. I really like shooting the Flint Hills grasses in the winter for their rustic colors that really work well for images.

Hillsdale Lake Sunset
from $60.00

We visited this location for four evenings in February, 2024. This image was from the very first night, and we could never top it. We loved the reflections of the sky and the sun kissing the horizon. Shot with a long exposure to give the lake a smooth dreamy feel. To me it felt like the taller tress were doing some sort of wacky Snag ballet. Yes I’m strange like that.

Grazing In The Flint Hills
from $70.00

Cruising the dusty backroads of the Flint Hills of Kansas we came across this small gathering of wild horses that had come down from the tops of the hills for an evening feed and water. They were too busy eating to look up and I was fine with that. Led by the white foreground horse, the early fall yellow colors of the grasses and weeds, combined with the broken sky gave this scene a real pleasing color and balance.

Bison Of The Hills
from $70.00

This is one of our favorite images from our trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas in February 2023. We stayed at this amazing location, a three thousand acre ranch and Bed and Breakfast west of Emporia. The owners were gracious enough to take us up into the Flint Hills where the herd of Bison were grazing. All of the Bison in this area of the ranch were females. This time of year they are separated from the males. We were protected by the safety of the 4WD vehicle we were riding in that gave us very close proximity to the “girls”. Otherwise we would have had to stay back 100 yards for our safety.

How YOU Doin?!
from $60.00

Another one of our favorite images from the Flint Hills Bison shoot. When shooting photographs of Bison, the golden rule is to stay 100 yards away. They can move very fast and be very dangerous. We were fortunate enough to be able to photograph them up close with a rancher who drove us up into the herd. I was able to get great angles, and the Bison were not spooked at all by us being there. Ideal for getting some fun shots like this one.

Side Eye
from $60.00

One of our up close Bison shots from our photo trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas. I really loved this profile shot of the female Bison and her friend chilling in the grass in the background. It’s fun to study these amazing creatures up close. Just not too close. And definitely not outside a vehicle too close. A fierce beauty.

Diablo
from $60.00

This Bison was photographed in the Flint Hills of Kansas in the winter of 2023. We really wanted to get a variety of Bison shots while we were there. Fortunately we were able to get really close to the Bison thanks to shooting from a 4WD Polaris and therefore get an extreme close up of this female Bison. We called this shot Diablo because we could just feel the terror this young one was thinking about unleashing if we were not protected.

Dark Horse
from $70.00

We were exploring an old horse stable in the Flint Hills of Kansas. As we waked in this fine looking fella poked his head through the opening in the stall to see who these new visitors were. I really loved how he was surrounded by all the tack hanging on both sides of the opening.

The Silver Buckle
from $60.00

We were exploring a horse barn in the Flint Hills of Kansas and came across this cool silver buckle attached to a horse bridle. I loved how it stood out against the warm tones of the leather straps and the surrounding barn wood. The sun's rays streaking the back wall of barn added a nice balance of lines to the image.

Roped Post
from $60.00

This photo is one of several images on our site we shot at a ranch in northern Oklahoma while we were prepping for an agricultural TV commercial shoot. On our prep days for the shoot, My Producer, Assistant Director, and myself would wander the ranch looking for images and locations to use in the commercial as B-Roll. I loved this process as it gave me a chance to create without the stress of shoot day. We spotted this rope hanging over a rusted post, and the light was wonderful.

Kansas Winter Trail
from $60.00

While Russ was shooting a sunset of the Flint Hills, I had a camera pointed at this little stand of trees nearby. I got a couple of decent shots. As we called it a day and started walking back to the truck, this little trail revealed itself. I can never say no to a trail. —Chris

Prairie Grasses
from $70.00

On a recent trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas we came across this little hillside. It caught my eye right away. I always love the longer grasses and hillsides as a rule. This one was so beautiful with the mix of colors and layers. We came back to the scene several times and finally caught some sun rays poking through the clouds on a cloudy afternoon.

Pastel Post
from $70.00

This image was shot in the late afternoon on my friend's property in rural Missouri. There is a hillside there where the grasses in the fall are really beautiful. I have photographed this hillside on many occasions, and this may be my favorite. There is an old fence line of abandoned wooden posts running along the hillside that provide a very simple and interesting point of focus. But this shot has always been about the colors of the grasses to me, and the peaceful feeling I get while there.

Round Up
from $70.00

While scouting for a TV commercial shoot in Great Bend, Kansas, we were up at sunrise to look for our shots at this extremely large feed lot. This classic backlit scene of the ranch hand herding cattle to the pens was immediately a favorite image.

Flint Hills Sentry
$310.00
  • 3:1 extra Wide Ratio

One of the most beautiful and scenic locations in the state of Kansas is the Flint Hills.

I first discovered this location while making a short film about the Flint Hills in 2014 titled “Standing Tallgrass”.

At that time, I was able to get a beautiful shot of wild horses grazing in these hills.

We returned in the spring of 2022 and drove to the location. We first photographed “Flint Hills Wild Horses”, which had two horses. After one of the horses moved on, I captured this lone horse at the top of the hill. At first I was disappointed I couldn’t get closer. But when I got back to my computers, I quickly discovered this was the perfect shot.

  • Due to the unique size, this image is only available in a 12X36 Metal Print with a frame mount (see sample below).

  • Available in Gloss or Matte Finish.

Bovine Sunrise
from $60.00

This photo was shot at a feedlot in Great Bend, Kansas right before sunrise. I climbed into the pen with the more than curious cattle. I wanted to get a clean low angle shot of them in silhouette and exposed for the sunrise sky. They cooperated nicely. They are much friendlier than Buffalo I might add.

A Cowboy's Saddle
from $60.00

On a recent trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas, Chris and i were invited to tag along as a husband and wife ranch team rounded up some cattle for feeding. Before the rancher saddled up I caught this image of his saddle prepped and ready to go. I loved all the straps and ropes.

Fallen Maple Leaves
from $60.00

These beautiful Maple leaves were collected in our front yard in Spring Hill, Kansas on Halloween night 2023 while I was waiting for the trick or treating to start showing up. There was such a variety of colors in the leaves as they were transitioning to their peak. I placed them on a rock in our landscaping and couldn’t resist shooting them. More of a still life scene, but I really love it. It’s already printed, matted and displayed in our house.

America
from $60.00

I found this little rusted metal flag stuck in the grasses at our rural Missouri slice of heaven known as Poplar Pond. I researched the significance of the flag with only 5 stars and 4 stripes, but didn’t find any real story there. Just one metal artist’s version of Old Glory I guess. God Bless America.
